The world's first Canopy by Hilton hotel has opened in Iceland's capital city, Hilton Worldwide announced yesterday.
Located on Hverfisgata Street in downtown Reykjavik, Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre features 112 guest rooms distributed across six inter-connected houses that have been converted into accommodations. Amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, complimentary bicycle lending, a chef-led restaurant, and a 459-square-foot meeting room for small groups of up to 50.
"Reykjavik is unlike any other city on Earth. Its rich heritage and natural beauty perfectly align with the ethos of the Canopy by Hilton brand," said Gary Steffen, global head, Canopy by Hilton. "We are thrilled to open the doors and begin greeting adventurous travelers searching for a unique experience to this city center neighborhood in Reykjavik."
Announced in fall 2014, Canopy by Hilton is Hilton's 13th brand. Specializing in "simple guest-directed service, thoughtful local choices, and surprisingly comfortable spaces," its hotels are intended to have a distinctly local focus, featuring designs and amenities reflective of the local neighborhoods in which they're located.
In the case of Reykjavik, the hotel was designed to pay homage to the city's art and music scene. For instance, the hotel's interior and exterior walls are adorned with work by local street artists, including graffiti artist Sigurður Ámundasonhe and architect Paolo Gianfrancesco. Additionally, the hotel features an LP library with records that can be played on any of 10 on-property record players -- a nod to its history, as the site on which the hotel sits once was occupied by The Faktory, one of Reykjavik's most popular music venues.
"With the support from Hilton Worldwide, as well as our Icelandic partners, this has become a distinguished property for Reykjavik," said Magnea Thorey Hjálmarsdóttir, managing director of Icelandair Hotels, which will operate the hotel on Hilton's behalf. "We've changed the face of hospitality in Iceland with the Canopy lifestyle brand, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from around the world."
