Fire Destroys Historic Wyoming Hotel

Earlier this month, a fire destroyed large portions of the Hitching Post Inn and Conference Center, a historic hotel in Cheyenne, Wyo., according to local news reports.

The hotel, which had 176 guest rooms and over 14,000 square feet of meeting space, was opened in 1927 and sold in 2006, then vacated in 2009 when its buyer filed for bankruptcy. Because the property was vacant, no injuries were reported.

The fire, which caused over $2 million in damage, came just weeks before new owners — who were in the process of renovating it — planned to reopen the local landmark, which was a popular destination for dignitaries and a home away from home for state lawmakers, who often stayed there during legislative sessions in the state capital.

Although a cause for the fire has yet to be determined, local officials have called in federal fire investigators to inspect the wreckage.
