Officials in Evansville, Ind., have selected a site on which they plan to build a new $95 million downtown events arena, which will be connected to a new 250-room hotel, the City of Evansville announced this month.
"A new arena and a new hotel will provide a tremendous boost to our entire city," Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel said in a statement. "Not only will these facilities speed up our revitalization efforts and attract new economic development, but they will create hundreds of new jobs for area residents."
Although its size was not announced, the new Evansville arena will cost $95 million to build and will be built on land currently occupied by the Executive Inn Evansville hotel, which will be redeveloped into a new hotel—probably a Hyatt or a Marriott—and connected to the new arena via pedestrian bridge.
Portions of the existing hotel will be demolished beginning next month to make way for the arena, which is scheduled to open in fall 2011 near the Evansville Auditorium and Convention Centre, known as "The Centre."
"The arena will be a perfect complement to The Centre," Weinzapfel said, "greatly increasing our ability to host conventions and other large events."
