Construction crews broke ground Friday on a new convention center hotel in downtown Wilmington, NC, the Wilmington Convention Center announced yesterday. The hotel, the Embassy Suites Wilmington Downtown Hotel, will be located adjacent to the LEED Silver-certified convention center and is scheduled to open in spring 2017.
"This is great news for the City of Wilmington: We have been anxiously awaiting a hotel next to the convention center since it opened in late 2010," said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo. "The new Embassy Suites will allow us to satisfy demand for larger groups in the downtown area and in onsite accommodations from a wider variety of groups and conventions that may not have considered us before now."
The Embassy Suites will offer 186 two-room guest suites and 6,600 square feet of meeting space, including a ballroom and pre-function space, a boardroom, and three small meeting rooms. Amenities will include an indoor pool and fitness center, a snack and coffee area, and a riverfront restaurant, not to mention a 4,003-square-foot roof deck and bar.
"Thanks to welcoming weather year-round and plenty to do, Wilmington is more than a great spot for meetings and events -- it's a destination," said Kim Hufham, president and CEO of the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The addition of the Embassy Suites will allow us to comfortably host groups with up to 750 attendees, as well as pursue more regional and national opportunities."
