A new Courtyard by Marriott hotel is in the works for downtown Wilmington, N.C., its developers announced last week. The hotel, which will be located near a new convention center that's already under construction, will feature seven stories, 125 rooms and an unspecified amount of meeting space.
"I see [Wilmington] as an up-and-coming market," developer Mitul Patel told local newspaper the Star-News earlier this fall. "To us, it's in the center of everything."
According to Patel, a partner in Greensboro, N.C.-based CN Hotels, the hotel will be in close proximity to local bars, restaurants and corporations, as well the new Wilmington Convention Center, which is scheduled to open in late 2009 or early 2010 with 30,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 12,000-square-foot ballroom and 12,000 square feet of pre-function space.
CN expects to break ground on the new Courtyard by Marriott hotel in June 2009, with a projected opening of summer 2010.
Upon opening, the property will join two other new hotels that are currently planned for downtown Wilmington, including a 157-room Hotel Indigo that will be built adjacent to the Wilmington Convention Center. Collectively, the three properties will give Wilmington 435 new rooms with which to serve groups meeting at the new convention center.
