Construction Underway on New Omaha Convention District

Omaha's best-known asset is Warren Buffet. A new development in the city's downtown core, however, promises to give the billionaire a run for his money. Known as the Capitol District, the project has officially commenced construction, according to the Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau, which announced this week that construction cranes are now on site and working.

Scheduled for completion in spring 2017, the Capitol District will include 225 apartments; 140,000 square feet of office space; 90,000 square feet of retail space for restaurants, shops, and entertainment; and, for meeting planners and attendees, a 14-story Marriott hotel that will have 333 guest rooms, a full-service restaurant, two bars, a Starbucks, a fitness center, a rooftop swimming pool, and 20,000 square feet of meeting space, including an 11,000-square-foot ballroom.

"It's all about location, location, location," said Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Keith Backsen. "The fact that this new development is right across from Omaha's convention center further enhances the city's convention package, and increases its appeal as a competitive meeting destination."
