Columbus Convention Center Plans Renovation

To help it compete with nearby cities like Indianapolis, Nashville and Cleveland — all of which have recently expanded their convention centers, or opened new ones — Columbus, Ohio, soon will commence a $25 million to $30 million renovation of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, local newspaper The Columbus Dispatch reported this week.

The goal of the renovation will be modernizing the facility so that it blends better with the Hilton Columbus Downtown and the Hyatt Regency Columbus, both of which are more contemporary, and both of which connect to the adjacent convention center.

“We’re definitely on the older side of our competitive set,” Joe Bocherer, vice president of sales for Experience Columbus, the city’s convention and visitors bureau, told The Columbus Dispatch. “And customers have certain expectations today.”

According to the paper, the design process already has begun and is expected to be complete this year. Construction, meanwhile, is expected to be complete by the end of 2015.
