Colorado's Richest Resident Buying Broadmoor Hotel

Colorado’s richest resident, Philip Anschutz, is purchasing the historic Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

The sale, which was announced the morning of September 15th, will make Anschutz the third owner since the hotel’s opening in 1918 by Spencer and Julie Penrose. Anschutz will be making the purchase from the Gaylords, one of Oklahoma’s wealthiest families, and will once again place the hotel in in-state ownership.

The hotel has maintained its AAA Five Diamond status since the Diamond rating was introduced in 1976. Anschutz is not planning on making any changes to the hotel or staff once the sale is completed in October. It is expected to remain under the current leadership of CEO and president, Steve Bartolin.

In a statement about the purchase, Bartolin said, “I have come to know Mr. Anschutz and I respect and like him a lot. He is committed to long term ownership and keeping The Broadmoor an independent hotel that will not be flagged or affiliated with a chain. I have also been so impressed with his passion for The Broadmoor and his knowledge of our history, which gives me great hope for its future. This is a very positive event.”

The Broadmoor has 744 rooms and suites, a world renowned spa, a tennis club, three pools, 18 restaurants and cafes, and three golf courses, one of which hosted this year’s US Women’s Open.
