Buffalo Niagara Convention Center Completes $7 Million Renovation

The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo, N.Y., has completed a $7 million renovation that began this summer and concluded today with its official grand reopening, the Buffalo Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau announced this week.

It's hoped that the renovation — which has equipped the convention center with a new entrance and electronic marquee, as well as wireless connectivity, a redesigned kitchen and an upgraded exhibit hall — will help Buffalo compete for new meetings from regional and national groups.

"The renovations to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center are an important piece in the Buffalo Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau's broader effort to rebrand Buffalo as an attractive tourism and convention destination," said Buffalo Niagara Convention Center Management Corp. Board Chair Gary Praetzel. "We will leverage this improved facility, recent upgrades to our region's hotel stock and our community's world-class attractions to bring visitors — and their dollars — to Buffalo and Erie County."

To accommodate the renovation, the convention center was closed for three months this summer; keeping it open during construction would have prolonged the project to 10 months.

"My administration has made attracting tourists a top priority," said Erie County Executive Chris Collins. "These renovations will help attract first rate conventions and events to Buffalo and Erie County. We are thrilled with the results of this investment of county dollars. The improvements to the convention center were long overdue and bring us up to date with what they're offering at other convention centers around the nation."

Also newly improved is the Hyatt Regency Buffalo which is connected to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center and has just completed a multi-year, $15 million renovation encompassing its 396 guest rooms and 21,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as its public areas, including its new stainless steel indoor pool — the only one of its kind in western New York — and its new full-service spa, called Spa Alexis.
