A Taste of Elegance
Bermudian sophistication hits a high note at the island's only AAA Five Diamond restaurant. The Newport Room, tucked off the lobby of the Fairmont Southampton, serves contemporary French cuisine in a nostalgic, nautical environment. Guests pass a ship's compass as they enter and dine among models of former sailboats from the famous Newport-Bermuda sailing race (begun in 1938 and still going strong). Brass and mahogany accents and a hushed atmosphere set the scene for polished French cuisine built on seasonal ingredients and served on bone china with silver service and Irish crystal. The seven-course Signature Tasting Menu (US$110-or US$220 with wine pairings-per person, plus 15-percent gratuity) includes an heirloom tomato salad, gratin of Jonah crab, foie gras terrine, chicken consomme, roasted sirloin of Wagyu beef, artisanal cheese, and citrus panna cotta. (Vegetarian options available.)
