After Hurricanes, Work Continues on Mississippi Coast Coliseum

In the wake of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which tore through the Gulf Coast this summer, construction crews are once again working at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi, Miss., reports local TV news affiliate WLOX.

"I like to think our construction is on fire, because they're moving very quickly and they're doing an excellent job," Coliseum Director Bill Holmes told WLOX. "This will be one of the jewels in Mississippi when we're done."

The convention center, which currently offers 180,000 square feet of meeting space, is in the midst of a $58 million expansion as part of a larger, three-phase plan to improve the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center property, at a total cost of $107 million. Upon completion, the expanded convention center will feature over 400,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

Although an active hurricane season has caused several construction delays, contractor Yates Construction told WLOX that it expects work to be complete on the project in July 2009. The coliseum's Web site, meanwhile, projects an opening date of October 2009.

Whenever it opens, Holmes expects the new and improved Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center to be fully booked. "With the leads that we're getting and the interest that we're showing, booking this facility I don't feel is going to be that big a problem," he told WLOX.
