Away.com talked to three pilots to put together this hilarious but oh-so-practical list of things airlines don't -- and won't -- tell you about their crews, planes, and service. We've also added some tips just for planners.
1. Crews are trained in more than just emergency exits. Apparently both flight attendants and pilots are taught basic self defense and given the option to go air commando at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
2. The air isn't immune to office romances. Everyone stays at the same hotel? It looks like not everything has changed since the days of "Mad Men."
The Top 10 Baggage Tips for Airline Passengers
3. Your co-pilot could be more experienced than you think. There's been so much downsizing in the airline industry that today's co-pilot may well be yesterday's Big Chief.
4. The deal with electronics. At this point there's only anecdotal evidence that electrotics interfere with aircraft operations.
5. The FAA has a sense of humor. Air-traffic controllers name virtual points in the sky after landmarks, sometimes quirky ones. The UFIRD zone floats high above Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in southern Florida.
6. And you thought filling a car was expensive. Fuel costs are astronomical.
7. There are no free meals for airline crews. Pilots, they're just like us. (Waiting in line at the food court.)
8. The fasten seatbelt sign is not a joke. Pilots have seem some pretty grim ceiling-induced injuries.
9. There are "good seats." The queasy among us should sit over the wing and avoid the tail like the plague.
10. Even pilots have to pee. Unfortunately, calls of nature now involve an all-clear signal from the flight attendants so pilots can use the same bathroom as everyone in the front of the plane.
