How to Talk About Work/Life Balance With Your Boss

How to Achieve Work/Life Balance

If your work/life balance is out of whack, there are many things you can try that will save you time and make you more productive. Ultimately, though, the best way to recalibrate your work/life scale might be having a difficult conversation with your boss.

"If you're struggling with your work/life balance, chances are, your manager or direct boss is causing some of those issues," says Glassdoor contributor Amy Elisa Jackson. "Does you manager constantly give you work over the weekends or ask you to work late every night? Do you get in trouble if you're a few minutes late, or are you constantly worrying about how your manager views your performance? It's time to do something about the issue."

The best way to seek help from your boss is to ask for it, simply and straightforwardly.

"HR professionals suggest you meet with your boss and that when it comes time to have the conversation, to be honest," says Jackson, who recommends offering solutions instead of merely complaining about the problem. "For example, suggest to your boss that you work remotely one day or offer ideas for scheduling a more compressed workweek. Be sure to show your boss a plan for being able to make those ideas works while continuing to meet deadlines and potentially exceeding your job responsibilities."
