It’s a common occurrence for many smartphone and iPhone owners. Desperate to recharge your iPhone or smartphone before its battery dies, you search in vain for an electrical outlet—and corresponding plug—to save your mobile phone from dying. In many cases, the situation becomes even more dire when your find yourself in a meeting, convention, or conference.

A new product, Brightbox, hopes to fix that. Brightbox was co-founded by Adam Johnson, a bartender who was tired of being asked to charge his patron’s phones. Johnson developed a secure phone charging station that would allow people to leave their phones safely within the station while attending meeting sessions or walking on the show floor. 

To use a Brightbox kiosk, a meeting attendee simply has to swipe a credit or debit card to open a chamber and plug his/her phone in to charge. To retrieve a phone, a user must simply swipe the same card. A flat fee, ranging from $1.99 to $3 is charged to use the service.

Currently, Brightbox can be found in more than 50 hotels, event venues, bars, restaurants, gyms, and shopping centers across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, including Andaz Hotels by Hyatt, the Dream New York hotel, and the Apella at Alexandria Center conference center.

Meeting planners and organizers can also rent a Brightbox device for their own meetings and events by contacting the company directly via its website, brightboxcharge.com. Rental rates vary depending on the event. There are two basic business models of the Brighbox charging station that are meant for meetings and events. The first allows the user to pay a flat fee of $1.99 to $2.95 per charge. The second model allows the venue, meeting organizer, or a third-party sponsor to pay for the phone charging. Both models can be enhanced by sponsorship and/or brand messaging.
