City officials have broken ground on a new Holiday Inn hotel in downtown Owensboro, Ky.

Located on the banks of the Ohio River, next to the new Owensboro Convention Center — opening in January 2014 with 92,994 square feet of function space — the new hotel will have 123 guest rooms. Opening in fall 2014, it also will have an indoor pool, fitness center, business center, and onsite restaurant and bar.

“We are committed to creating a first-class hotel and riverfront experience for our community and travelers to the area,” Glenn Higdon, CEO of LinGate hospitality, the hotel’s owner, said in a statement.

The Holiday Inn Owensboro Riverfront Hotel will be one of two new hotels next to the Owensboro Convention Center. The other hotel, a 150-room Hampton Inn & Suites, is scheduled to open by December.

“The more hotels we have downtown, the more groups we can accommodate that need to 200 to 300 hotel rooms nearby, so we are excited about having an additional hotel as our neighbor,” said Owensboro Convention Center General Manager Dean Dennis.
