Social media remains one of the most effective marketing channels there is -- if your business can crack the code to gain followers and likes.

The secret is posting "shareable" content, according to SmartBlog on Social Media's Avinash Nair, who says businesses that want their posts to go viral should make them not merely entertaining or informative, but helpful.

"From MensXP to About.com, a lot of websites earn bread by creating how-to guides and step-by-step tutorial videos that are designed to solve a problem and make life easier," Nair says. "Helpful content spreads easily because we humans are biologically as well as psychologically wired to help out other human beings. From how to make coffee ice cubes through to career tips, everything that helps people has a good chance of being shared."
