If there’s two things travelers can’t live without, it’s Internet and coffee, according to Hotels.com, which yesterday released the results of its “2012 Hotels.com Amenities Survey” showing free Wi-Fi and complimentary breakfast as travelers’ favorite “must-have” hotel amenities.
The survey of more than 8,600 travelers in 28 countries and cities showed that free Wi-Fi is the No. 1 factor in choosing a hotel for 34 percent of travelers, even on leisure stays. Likewise, it’s the most important amenity for 56 percent of travelers when they’re traveling on business, and is the amenity that 66 percent of travelers most wish would become standard at all hotels in 2013.
“With an increase in airlines and airports offering free Wi-Fi, tech-savvy travelers expect the experience to continue upon arrival at their hotel,” says Taylor L. Cole, travel expert for Hotels.com. “They are using their tablets, smartphones and laptops to plan activities, stay connected to family and even order a delivery meal straight to their hotel room, so it’s no surprise they require free and fast Wi-Fi.”
Although 15 percent of guests said they would like to enjoy their free Wi-Fi on hotel-provided tablets, free food and beverage was ranked as the next most popular amenity. Specifically:
• Free breakfast is the No. 1 non-tech amenity that travelers want to become standard at all hotels in 2013.
• Happy hours and wine tastings are 42 percent of travelers’ favorite “newly offered” amenity.
• High-end coffee makers are the top “modern” in-room amenity for 23 percent of travelers.
• Complimentary bottled water is the most appreciated “simple” amenity for 43 percent of travelers.
• Unlimited free food and beverages is the comfort from home that’s most missed by 23 percent of travelers.
Hotels.com also gauged which hotel amenities have become passé and found that bath menus/bath butlers (26 percent) and turndown service (24 percent) no longer interest most travelers.
