Longtime convention sales professional Kay Hollander will retire at the end of December, after more than 30 years serving the meetings industry, venue management firm Global Spectrum announced this week.

"This industry, like any other, has changed in many ways over the last 30 plus years," Hollander said. "The key to sustaining success has been to adapt to those changes while staying true to the fundamentals that make all business work. You need to understand what the client needs, create and maintain your relationships and commit yourself to constantly keep learning. It was a fun and always interesting career and I leave it with many great friendships that I made along the way."

Currently director of sales and marketing at the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) — which Global Spectrum manages — Kay grew up in South Florida and began her career as assistant director for the City of Miami Convention Bureau. Since then, she's served in various sales and marketing positions for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), the Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau and Chicago's McCormick Place convention center. She returned to Miami Beach in 2003 and has served as the convention center's head of sales ever since.

"I had the pleasure of meeting Kay 25 years ago, when I joined the GMCVB," said GMCVB Senior Vice President of Convention Sales Ita Moriarty. "She quickly became my mentor and friend. I have always been impressed by her passionate belief in Miami as a meetings destination and her dedication and focus to achieving her goals. Because of her tremendous sales efforts, this community reaped the economic benefits from many of the meetings and conventions that Kay personally booked at the MBCC and hotels. She is truly a legend in our industry and will be missed by clients, hoteliers and the entire bureau team."

Hollander "will keep busy in retirement," according to Global Spectrum, which said she plans to spend more time with family and friends "but hasn't ruled out continuing to impact the industry as a consultant."
