Some 125 meeting and media professionals attended this year's DMC Network Exchange in Park City.
Every January, Hollywood descends on Park City -- the Aspen of Utah -- for the Sundance Film Festival, a 10-day event that attracts more than 40,000 people to celebrate the work of independent filmmakers. It's not just films that are on display during Sundance, however. It's also Park City itself, for whom the festival is an invaluable opportunity to showcase its vast selection of lodging, activities and venues.
Unfortunately, Sundance attendees and observers only get to see one side of the alpine destination: its wintry side. Unbeknownst to them, Park City has a sunny side, too.
That's the side 125 meeting planners and media professionals got to see and experience last month during the 2019 DMC Network Exchange, held in Park City June 27-30.
An annual gathering hosted by the DMC Network
, a consortium of independently owned destination management companies, this year's event was organized by Summit Events, a Park City-based DMC whose three-day program of education and adventure highlighted Park City's diverse summer offerings -- many of which take place outdoors in the Wasatch Mountains.
"Our town's mantra is that everyone benefits from being outside," said Rob Walsh, owner of Summit Events, a DMC Network company. "With over 400 miles of trails, our guests have an infinite amount of outdoor pursuits to experience. From hiking and mountain biking to strolling Main Street and experiencing a traditional mining town, we really do have everything on our doorstep to create the perfect incentive experience."
Because it took place in a destination that has such an intimate relationship with nature, sustainability was a major theme of this year's event.
"Sustainability is a cornerstone of the way we operate our city," said Dan Howard, director of communications for Visit Park City. "We have an aspiration to be carbon-neutral in the future, and so there is a big focus on green meetings and wellness events here. We have a local population that are hugely proud of Park City, and you can really feel the tone that the residents set when you visit. To that end I think Park City offers an additional unique perspective to our guests."
The next DMC Network Exchange will take place June 17-20, 2020, in Atlantic City.
