The high-end lifestyle hotel brand Proper is preparing to open a trio of properties between May and September of this year, in Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles, California, as well as in Austin, Texas. The brand's first property, San Francisco Proper Hotel, opened in the fall of 2017.
Proper Hospitality selects creative locations for its hotels, and promises a locally connected experience in terms of design, food-and-beverage partnerships and in-room amenities.

Santa Monica Proper Hotel will be the first of the trio to debut, in May. The 271-room property will fuse a circa-1928 Spanish Colonial Revival building on Wilshire Boulevard with new construction. The original historic building has been restored, with Spanish architecture and Moorish details intact. For the interior design, Proper worked with local artists and incorporated a lot of raw materials and organic textures. A rooftop deck and pool will be on the sixth floor, as will a large restaurant outfitted with a circular, indoor-outdoor bar. The hotel will also offer a 2,500-square-foot gym and more than 8,000 square feet of meeting space. A ground-floor restaurant, Onda, will be helmed by Jessica Koslow, the chef and owner of the L.A. café Sqirl, and Gabriela Camara, the award-winning chef behind Mexico City's Contramar and San Francisco's Cala. A 3,000-square-foot flagship Surya Spa will be on-site as well, in collaboration with the hotel.

The 244-room Austin Proper Hotel & Residences will open in June in the Texas capital, in downtown's southwest corner. Proper's first property outside of California will reside in a 32-story modern high-rise at the edge of Lady Bird Lake and alongside the 2nd Street District. Three restaurants, two bars, an outdoor lounge, two elevated swimming pools, and a full-service spa and wellness facility also are part of the mix. The hotel will have nearly 10,000 square feet of meeting space, the most in Proper's portfolio. Austin locals Larry McGuire and Tom Moorman of McGuire Moorman Hospitality will oversee the F&B lineup, slated to include a ground-floor Mediterranean-inspired grill, a coffee shop, two cocktail bars and a poolside Mexican eatery with a wood-burning grill.

Set to debut in September, Downtown Los Angeles Proper Hotel will be an adaptive reuse of the landmark 1926 Curlett & Beelman building at 11th and Broadway. The structure was a private club in the 1930s, hotel in the '40s and a YWCA until 2004. The 148-room hotel promises two restaurants, multiple bars, and a rooftop restaurant, bar and swimming pool. Two unique luxury configurations, the Pool Suite and Basketball Court Suite, will be available for events as well as overnight stays. The Pool Suite will incorporate the former Y's indoor pool into the living area, underneath a huge ceramic mural by emerging local artist Ben Medansky. The Basketball Court Suite will be built around a former racquetball court turned basketball court, creating an usual hotel event space -- not to mention a unique and exceptionally spacious guest room. A first-floor restaurant and rooftop F&B venue will be under the oversight of James Beard Award-winning L.A. restaurateurs Caroline Styne and Suzanne Goin, known for A.O.C., Lucques, Tavern and the Larder.
