Day 1: Bikes and Bars
Start your day right with breakfast at Paiku on North Leavitt Avenue, where the pancakes, omelettes, crepes and hashes all have a unique local spin. Try the whole-wheat pancakes topped with bananas, candied walnuts and whipped cream, served with organic maple syrup.
Portland is supremely bike-friendly, and Cordilleran Tours offers eclectic options such as the Meditative Garden Bike Tour (enjoy wildflowers galore along the Wildwood Trail) or a visit to the Columbia Gorge Hidden Waterfalls.
Just across the Willamette River from Downtown Portland, the Lloyd Eastside district beckons with hip eateries like Canard, serving "experimental French" bar snacks and more. Try the oysters and steam burgers, then head to Pullman Wine Bar & Merchant in the Hotel Eastlund for some late-night conviviality.
Day 2: Donuts and Displays
Having enjoyed a Portland breakfast on Day 1, it's time to graduate to the Brunch Tour from Taste Portland Tours. This 2.5-hour tasting adventure will take you to four or five of downtown's top eateries to sample local favorites like the warm gourmet brioche donuts, savory pork-belly breakfast salad and house-cured corned beef with bacon.
Founded in 1892, the Portland Art Museum is the oldest such establishment in the Pacific Northwest and features more than 42,000 works by artists ranging from ancient Native Americans to today's cutting-edge multimedia practitioners. Upcoming exhibits include "Volcano! Mount St. Helens in Art," and "Ansel Adams in Our Time," focusing on some of the most iconic images by the acclaimed American photographer.
Day 3: Hike and Hang Out
Sleep in and then go for a taste of the Lone Star State in Oregon via Bullard, the name of the Texas town from which chef (and Top Chef star) Doug Adams hails, nestled in the new Woodlark Hotel. Try the Loaded Hashbrowns (Texas red potatoes, sour cream, guacamole, pickled jalapeños and shredded cheddar topped with a sunny-side-up egg).
It's all about the outdoors here, and the Portland Insider will take you on a group hike through colorful local neighborhoods (like the historic Pearl Warehouse District) as well as through Forest Park, a beautiful greensward complete with more than 80 miles of scenic paths and 5,100 lush acres.
Immerse yourself in the city's vibrant nightlife at Holocene, a two-level nightclub and bar in a former auto warehouse, where live bands cover everything from folk to indie pop to techno. The roomy bar is a great place from which to take it all in, and the happening vibe is trademark Portland friendly.
