A building that once housed the city's electric utility is once again poised to bring energy to New Orleans, according to Virginia-based Salamander Hotels & Resorts, which recently announced a July 6 opening date for NOPSI Hotel, New Orleans, of which it is the manager.

"NOPSI Hotel will become known as one of the finest city hotels in America, and we look forward to reflecting the unique spirit of New Orleans," said Salamander Hotels & Resorts Founder Sheila Johnson.

Named for its original tenant, New Orleans Public Service Inc. (NOPSI), which built it as its headquarters in 1927, the building that houses NOPSI Hotel has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. Having undergone a meticulous restoration encompassing its street facades, cast iron rails, stone panels, vaulted ceilings, arches, ornamental columns, brass grills, and stone terrazzo flooring -- all of which have been restored to their original glory -- it's now home to 217 guest rooms, a regionally inspired restaurant, a rooftop pool and bar, a fitness center, and 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space.

The latter includes five faulted breakout rooms, an outdoor patio, and a 4,000-square-foot ballroom with arched windows, exposed brick, 30-foot ceilings, and a preserved 24-foot-high crane and track that once transported machinery.

"We are thrilled to bring NOPSI Hotel to life in this spectacular and grand landmark," said General Manager Ellen LeMaire. "Many residents have fond memories of visiting NOPSI, and we understand and appreciate the great responsibility that comes with opening this historic building. To preserve and bring those remembrances back to life, our dynamic team of service professionals stand ready to deliver vibrant, friendly hospitality and an authentic New Orleans experience."

In celebration of its grand opening, NOPSI Hotel is offering groups of 10 rooms or more an introductory rate of $169 for arrivals between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31, 2017.
