Florida's fourth Four Seasons hotel, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, has opened in Surfside, FL, just north of Miami Beach, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts announced today.

Located in Miami's historic The Surf Club -- which opened in 1930 as a private social club for celebrities and socialites, including Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Tennessee Williams, and Joan Crawford, to name a few -- the hotel offers 77 guest rooms; a selection of hotel residences; an onsite restaurant and champagne bar; a private beach; a spa; and three pools, including a future "cabana pool" that will have 40 air-conditioned, fully-furnished cabanas with full bathrooms.

"It was a home away from home for people who shared provenance, privilege, and a preference for pleasure," Four Seasons said of the original Surf Club. "There was booze on the beach during prohibition, kayaks in the swimming pool, black tie boxing dinners, and lavish themed galas, one time with elephants, another with 300 tables made of ice. It was a place of myth, legend, and endless laughter."

Along with the original clubhouse, a Mediterranean Revival building designed by Russell T. Pancoast, the property now features three new buildings designed by Richard Meier, whose choice of "discrete classical modernism" gives them the effect of "simultaneously reflecting and disappearing into the changing sky, the beach, and the sea," Four Seasons said.

Like its buildings, the hotel itself will be a mix of old and new.

"We believe that if you create something unique it will last," said Nadim Ashi, founder of Fort Partners, current owner of The Surf Club. "We have not created The Surf Club, but we have a commitment to ensure that what we are doing has integrity, culture, and quality at its heart. It needs to be alive and loved."

Concluded General Manager Reed Kandalaft, "The Surf Club's success has always been determined by quality, passion, and relaxed precision, and that remains our priority today: being intuitive, exceeding our guests' every expectation, and creating memories that will last a lifetime."
