Although it’s one of the nation’s most visited destinations for meetings and conventions, Las Vegas has a reputation for being no work and all play. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) wants to change that. On Tuesday, therefore, it unveiled its plans for the Las Vegas Global Business District.

Completed in phases, the Las Vegas Global Business District would transform Las Vegas into a serious business destination by turning the area around the Las Vegas Convention Center into a hub for international enterprise.

Specifically, the plan outlines three objectives to be completed over the next several years:

The plan’s first objective is renovating the 54-year-old Las Vegas Convention Center — its first major expansion in more than a decade — and creating a “convention district campus.” Inside the convention center, improvements will include additional exhibit space, meeting rooms and general session space; upgraded technology; new food and beverage outlets; and a new grand concourse connector with extra lobby space. Outside the facility, the convention district campus will include outdoor public and gathering spaces, as well as “various design elements” to improve the neighborhood.

Objective No. 2 is creating an “international business center” by leveraging and expanding the World Trade Center brand, which arrived in Las Vegas in 2011 when the Las Vegas Convention Center was designated an official World Trade Center site. Plans include creating a dedicated World Trade Center facility — in addition to the convention center — and attracting more meetings and conventions to the city.

The plan’s third and final component is transportation. Specifically, LVCVA plans to work with local transportation stakeholders to create a “centralized transportation hub” that will improve connectivity and service in the city’s resort corridor.

“I truly believe this is a transformative project,” says LVCVA President and CEO Rossi Ralenkotter. “Las Vegas is known for defining moments that change the hospitality industry, and this project will be the next defining moment. This more than just a project; this is a vision that will launch Las Vegas forward ahead of the competition for decades to come.”
