After a challenging 2016 dealing with Zika and a fiscal crisis, Meet Puerto Rico has announced that it has secured three major bookings -- one of which is from a group that canceled last year because of concerns over the Zika virus.
"At the end of a complicated year for the industry and facing a 2017 full of challenges and opportunities, the expertise and focus of Meet Puerto Rico's team, with the absolute support of our partners, secured the closure of groups in three strategic sectors, which will have a significant impact on the economy and set a hopeful trend for the coming months," says Milton Segarra, president and CEO of Meet Puerto Rico, the organization that markets Puerto Rico as a meeting and convention destination.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is having its 61st public meeting in San Juan from March 10-15, 2018. The meeting, which was scheduled to be held in Puerto Rico in the fall of 2016 but was canceled due to the Zika issue, will include approximately 1,500 attendees for a total of 8,406 room nights.

The International Conference on Plasticity Damage and Fracture will be meeting in Puerto Rico in 2018 with an estimated 2,000 room nights at the Intercontinental San Juan and an economic impact of $1.75 million.

The third booking is for Feyline Conceptions, one of the largest musical events companies in the U.S. Feyline Conceptions has have signed a multi-year contract with El Conquistador Resort, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. Their first event will take place from November 30 to December 3, 2017.

"Even though 2016 was challenging we are entering an exciting time for Puerto Rico," says Segarra. "To our knowledge, no one has contracted the Zika virus as the result of attending a conference here and we are seeing a renewed interest in considering Puerto Rico the ideal destination for meetings and conventions."
