Dubai's central business district, known as Business Bay (pictured), was hit hard by the global financial crisis. The district -- once littered with the remains of abandoned construction projects -- is in the midst of a comeback, however. The latest sign of its revival: InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) today announced plans to open a new Crowne Plaza hotel there in 2019.

Situated on the Business Bay Canal, near the Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, Crowne Plaza Dubai Business Bay will have 290 guest rooms and suites, several dining options, a gym, and an outdoor infinity pool, as well as a ballroom and several breakout rooms.

Separately, IHG also has announced plans to open a residential development -- The InterContinental Residence Suites Dubai Business Bay -- on the Business Bay canal extension of Dubai Creek, across from the planned Crowne Plaza.

"In the Middle East, we are currently engaged in the strategic expansion of the Crowne Plaza brand, as well as growing the footprint of our InterContinental Residence Suites," said Pascal Gauvin, chief operating officer, India, Middle East, and Africa, IHG. "Crowne Plaza is all about making business travel work and ensuring our guests have the most productive stay while they're on the road. InterContinental Residence Suites endeavors to provide both short- and long-term residents with a measure of luxury and location second to none. Dubai continues to be one of the strongest business and leisure destinations in the region and given that Business Bay is positioned as one of the city's most centrally located commercial and lifestyle hubs, it is the perfect location for both these properties."
