Revolutionary, reclaimed, clean, and green, Pittsburgh has earned its reputation as one of America's "most livable" cities. A thriving downtown Cultural District, outstanding dining and nightlife, world-class museums, major league sports, and tax-free shopping await.
DAY 1: PITTSBURGH IS ART
Visit The Andy Warhol Museum,
the most comprehensive museum in North America dedicated to one artist. The museum features an extensive permanent collection from the prince of Pop Art and Pittsburgh native.
The Carnegie Museum of Art
is arguably the first museum of contemporary art in the United States and houses an outstanding collection of contemporary works. It is home to Carnegie International, the oldest North American exhibition of contemporary art from around the globe.
Take in a show at one of the many theaters within Pittsburgh's Cultural District,
a 14-square-block area of downtown. From ballet and opera to the symphony and Broadway productions, Pittsburgh's theater scene has something for everyone. DAY 2: ONLY IN PITTSBURGH
Get nose-to-beak at the National Aviary,
America's only freestanding bird zoo. Learn about this diverse collection of more than 500 birds from around the world and take in free-flying outdoor shows or hand-feed flamingos and macaws.
The Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh
are one-of-a-kind. These classrooms, located in the 42-story Cathedral of Learning (pictured below), represent the countries whose citizens immigrated to Pittsburgh.
End the afternoon with a tasting tour at Wigle Whiskey,
Pittsburgh's first new distillery since Prohibition. Visitors will learn how and why Pittsburgh became America's first epicenter of whiskey. DAY 3: OUTSIDE THE ORDINARY
10:00 AM Strip District,
an Old World--style marketplace, is abuzz with shoppers patronizing an exciting mix of wholesalers, fish and produce merchants, ethnic food retailers, antiques galleries, gift and specialty shops, craft shops, art galleries, and sidewalk vendors. A great perk about shopping in Pittsburgh is there is no tax on clothing, shoes, or groceries. 7:00 PM
The South Side of Pittsburgh is an endless source of shopping and entertainment. But, when your group has exhausted all shopping efforts, arrange for them to wind down with a cocktail and great meal along East Carson Street or at the SouthSide Works
entertainment complex. This article appears in the February 2018 issue of Successful Meetings.
