Southwest Plans Service To, From South Carolina
December 14, 2010
Effective March 13, 2011, Southwest Airlines will begin flights to and from South Carolina at two airports, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greenville and Charleston International Airport in Charleston, it recently announced.
In Greenville, the carrier will operate seven daily nonstop flights to five destinations, including two flights to Baltimore, two to Chicago, one to Nashville, one to Houston and one to Orlando.
In Charleston, meanwhile, it will operate seven daily nonstop flights to four destinations, including two flights to Baltimore, two to Chicago, one to Nashville and one to Houston.
In addition to the seven daily nonstop flights to and from these cities, Southwest Airlines' new service will offer direct or connecting service to more than 60 destinations, including Las Vegas, Denver, Dallas, Sacramento and Salt Lake City.
"Southwest Airlines is delighted to bring our special brand of low-fare, high-quality Customer Service to travelers in Greenville-Spartanburg and Charleston," said Southwest Airlines Senior Vice President of Marketing and Revenue Management Dave Ridley. "For nearly 40 years, we have been liberating customers across the country from the tyranny of high fares and poor service. We can't wait to continue this mission by introducing our wonderful people, low fares, and Boeing 737 jet service to the Palmetto State."
According to both the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greenville Convention and Visitors Bureau, the new Southwest service will offer a boost to the region's meetings industry.
"The addition of Southwest Airlines into the Greenville market offers travelers a new low-cost option to visit our destination for leisure, business, meetings and conventions," said Greenville CVB Vice President of Sales Todd Bertka. "We hope to expose an entirely new group of travelers to our city who may not have visited before."
Added Charleston Area CVB Executive Director Helen Hill, "The No. 1 challenge we face in attracting meetings and conventions to the Charleston area has been the lack of flights and the high cost of airfare. Having Southwest enter our market will not only have a moderating effect on airfares across the board, it will open up more seats to more places, which benefits everyone."
