Airlines Agree to Pay More Rent to Fund New Atlanta Airport Terminal
September 7, 2010
Airlines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport have agreed to pay a total of $30 million in additional rent over the course of four years to help pay for a new $1.3 billion international terminal that's scheduled to open there in 2012, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced last week.
The "supplemental terminal rental payment" — agreed to by Hartsfield-Jackson's largest carrier, Delta Air Lines, as well as AirTran Airways and other airlines serving the airport — will total $12 million in fiscal 2013, according to the mayor, $8 million in fiscal 2014, $5 million in fiscal 2015 and $5 million in fiscal 2016.
"This agreement is another key element in our effort to ensure that Atlanta remains the [world's] busiest passenger airport," Mayor Reed said during a press conference.
Already under construction, Atlanta's new terminal, the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, will consist of a new 12-gate facility that connects via automated people mover to the airport's existing 28-gate international concourse E, creating a 40-gate international air travel complex at Hartsfield-Jackson.
Said AirTran CEO Bob Fornaro, "Being a good corporate citizen means doing the right thing for the good of the community, and today's announcement is the right thing for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the people of Atlanta and AirTran Airways."
Added Delta CEO Richard Anderson, "The completion of the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal will strengthen Atlanta's standing as a major international gateway and provide a world-class facility for Delta's international customers."
