Kansas County Endorses Casino Proposal
August 17, 2010
Having heard proposals last week from three gaming developers, the Sumner County Commission in Sumner County, Kan., has endorsed its favorite — a $255 million casino and hotel project in Wellington, Kan., near Wichita, courtesy of Global Gaming LLC of Ada, Okla. — the
Wichita Business Journal reported today.
Under Kansas' expanded gambling law, passed in 2007, developers must obtain a local government endorsement before their plans can be approved by the state, which will assign the seven-member Kansas Lottery Commission to either approve or deny a contract.
By endorsing Global Gaming, the county has rejected two competing proposals. The first, from Peninsula Gaming Partners of Dubuque, Iowa, called for an equestrian center, including a 100,000-square-foot indoor arena, as well as a 150-room hotel, more than 1,500 slot machines and a 10-table poker room. The second, from Harrah's Entertainment, called for 1,750 slot machines, 50 table games and a World Series of Poker room, as well as a variety of restaurants, a sports bar, a 100-room hotel and 15,000 square feet of meeting space.
Global Gaming's winning proposal includes plans for a 260,000-square-foot casino with 1,300 electronic games, 40 blackjack tables and 20 poker tables, as well as a 1,400-seat entertainment and events center, an 80-room hotel, and six restaurants and bars.
