Convention center management company SMG has been awarded a new 2.5-year contract to manage the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority announced last week.

SMG, which is based in Pennsylvania, has managed the convention center since it opened in 1994, according to local business journal Providence Business News, and the Dunkin' Donuts Center since 2006, when the state purchased it from the city.

The company beat out competitor Global Spectrum for the deal, which runs from Dec. 1, 2010, to June 30, 2013, and is worth an estimated $500,000 annually.
