Less than six months after opening, the new Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel has been awarded LEED Gold status by the U.S. Green Building Council, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts announced today.

The hotel, which has 185 guest rooms and 12,000 square feet of meeting space, is part of Three PNC Plaza. A 23-story high-rise that's one of the nation's largest green, mixed-use buildings, it's owned by The PNC Financial Services Group, which has more newly constructed LEED-certified buildings — 80 — than any other company on earth.

"We are proud to continue Fairmont Hotels & Resorts' tradition of operational sustainability and responsible tourism here at the Pittsburgh location," said General Manager Leonard S. Czarnecki. "In fact, Fairmont Pittsburgh is the first LEED-certified project for Fairmont, and we are looking forward to growing our reputation as a responsible member of this community."

In order to achieve LEED Gold certification, the Fairmont Pittsburgh had to meet strict sustainable design and construction guidelines set by the USGBC. Among its environmentally-friendly features:

• The hotel incorporates energy-efficient light bulbs, guest room occupancy sensors and natural light that will help it reduce its energy consumption as well as its carbon footprint.

• The hotel features water-conserving fixtures that will save about 930,000 gallons of water annually.

• To improve air quality, guest rooms are served by dedicated ventilation units that supply 100 percent outdoor air.

• The hotel practices green housekeeping with low-toxic and environmentally-friendly cleaners.

• Waste at the hotel is sorted to divert landfill-bound trash, and all guest rooms feature recycling bins.

• The hotel serves dishes made with local and organic ingredients in its restaurant and bar; treats food waste with an enzyme-based digester; and donates fryer oil to a local processor that turns it into biodiesel.
