Despite Economy, Boston Books Record Number of Events
July 12, 2011
Although the U.S. economy remains bleak, the meetings industry is in full recovery in Boston, where the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) booked a record number of events during fiscal year 2011, signing the most future events at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) and Hynes Convention Center since 2007, it announced today.
All told, MCCA booked 77 future events in fiscal 2011, up 10 percent from last year, and created 808,117 future hotel room nights — the most generated since fiscal 2008, and a 37 percent increase over fiscal 2010. Collectively, the 77 future events are expected to generate $676.8 million in economic impact for Boston and Massachusetts, as well as $43.2 million in state and city taxes.
"This is a sign of the worldwide confidence in Boston," said MCCA Executive Director James E. Rooney. "While other cities are scrambling for business in the meetings and convention industry, these numbers prove Boston delivers exceptional meetings and an exceptional destination."
