Travel guide publisher Fodor's has revamped its annual list of the best U.S. hotels, previously known as the "Fodor's Choice Gold Awards," and re-launched it as the "Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards," its first-ever global list of top hotels, it announced this week.

The "Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards 2011" features hotels worldwide selected by Fodor's to receive a best-in-class distinction in eight new categories:

New & Noteworthy: The year's best new and reinvented hotels;
Grande Dame: Legendary hotels with superlative history and service;
Casual Chic: Effortlessly stylish hotels with rustic-modern appeal;
Design: Cutting-edge boutique hotels at all price points;
Local Flavor: Go-to hotels for a truly authentic experience;
Clubby Atmosphere: Hip urban pied-à-terre;
Luxurious Retreat: Top choices for a complete escape; and
Trusted Brand: World-class examples of international hotel chains.

The selection process for the "Fodor's 100" required months of deliberations. Fodor's writers and editors nominated several hundred hotel properties, representing the world's best in the specified categories. From there, a team of senior editors narrowed the list down to the top 100.

"Our editors and writers travel the globe each year to scout hotels, and the 'Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards' represent the best of the best," said Arabella Bowen, executive editorial director at Fodor's Travel. "Fodor's understands that choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions a traveler makes, and we believe these 100 hotels deliver the style, service and quality that our discerning travelers seek."

Among this year's U.S. winners were The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, which was recognized in the "New & Noteworthy" category; The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., which was recognized in the "Grande Dame" category; The Mondrian South Beach in Miami Beach, Fla., which was recognized in the "Design" category; Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Mont., which was recognized in the "Local Flavor" category; Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn., which was recognized in the "Luxurious Retreat" category; and the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Kauai, Hawaii, which was recognized in the "Trusted Brand" category.
