The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) has sent a survey to 10,640 individuals, the results of which will help it create the first-ever job analysis of the practice of exhibition management, it announced last week.

The job analysis will include descriptive information about the tasks assigned to exhibition managers, as well as the knowledge and skills required to perform them. According to IAEE, the result will be the exhibition industry's first definition of core competencies in exhibition management.

"By using a survey-based job analysis, a large sample of subject matter experts (SMEs) will provide essential insight to create a solid foundation for IAEE education, the CEM Learning Program, The Art of the Show textbook and additional learning platforms," IAEE explained.

The job analysis project will be led by a special task force — known as the IAEE Job Analysis Task Force — chaired by Jennifer Hoff, CEM, general manager of VP International, who already has spent more than 20 hours on the tasks of identifying job functions and the characteristics within each identified job function.

"The creation of a job analysis is a tedious, exhaustive process," Hoff said, "but the end results will be invaluable. Members of the task force have worked tirelessly on this important project, and we encourage IAEE members, as well as anyone practicing exhibition management to weigh in by completing this 30-minute survey."

Those working in the exhibition management field are encouraged to take IAEE's job analysis survey online. Those who do will be entered into a drawing for one of five $200 iTunes gift cards or a complimentary, full meeting registration to Expo! Expo! IAEE's Annual Meeting & Exhibition, taking place Dec. 4-6, 2012, in Orlando. The survey will be closed in approximately four weeks and a full report provided to the IAEE board of directors at its June 2012 meeting.
