Its first class of more than 50 event industry executives is currently working to achieve its new Digital Event Strategist (DES) Certification, the Virtual Edge Institute (VEI) reported last week.

Announced in 2011, the DES Certification program aims to teach participants the skills and strategies needed to "plan, design, build and execute digital engagements and environments that achieve strategic business objectives." It includes a 16-module e-learning program, followed by a comprehensive final exam, the first of which will take place on Jan. 13 during Convening Leaders, the annual meeting of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA).

"By completing the DES certification program, VEI-certified individuals will have gained the highest-level of proficiency and achievement within the digital events industry," said VEI Executive Director Michael Doyle. "Not only will they have improved skills, but also industry recognition and career advancement opportunities. And they'll have ongoing access to subject matter experts as they encounter challenges in this rapidly evolving field."

According to VEI, scholarships from Freeman and bxb Online covered the entire cost of the program for its first class of DES graduates, including a $175 application fee, $595 for the learning modules and $325 for the final exam.

VEI currently is accepting applications for both the DES program and for scholarships for its second class of DES graduates. Applications are due by Jan. 31, 2013.
