APEX Green Meeting Standards Now Available

Meeting planners interested in green events can finally establish best practices against industry standards: Seven of the nine long-awaited APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting standards have been published by ASTM International, the Convention Industry Council (CIC) announced last week.

CIC's Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) initiative was launched in 2008 to create industry standards for environmentally sustainable events, officially sanctioned by ASTM International — formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Available for purchase at the ASTM website, the seven published standards — each of which addresses specific sustainable elements, including staff management and environmental policy, communications, waste, energy, air quality, water, procurement and community partners — are in the following areas:

• Audio/Visual
• Communication & Marketing Materials
• Destinations
• Exhibits
• Food & Beverage
• On-Site Office
• Transportation

The two remaining standards are in the areas of Accommodations, which is currently undergoing final balloting through ASTM, and Meeting Venue, which is currently being prepared for publication.

Available in both printed and electronic formats at a cost of $40–$46 each, the standards will be available for purchase in a single collected volume once the Accommodations and Meeting Venue standards are published.
